Pedigree pets 'prove pricey'

The potential for costly veterinary bills - and in turn expensive pet insurance claims - with regard to pedigree animals has been highlighted by a leading provider. Spokesperson for Debenhams Pet Insurance Diane Jackson explained to the Sun that the average cost of visiting a vet is £220 and that almost half the nation's furry friends require veterinary care every year. Ms Jackson explained that due to hereditary conditions that many pedigree dogs and cats may have, their treatment can be costly and prolonged. She noted that Persians often suffer from kidney complaints which can cost around £300 and Great Danes are likely to develop hip dysplasia - which can cost up to £4,000 to deal with. Ms Jackson expressed concern that some owners will delay their trip to the vet to avoid the costs, which could place an animal's life in danger. "All this could be easily avoided by owners making small adjustments to their monthly budget by setting up a pet insurance policy," she concluded. Pet owners were advised by charity Fetch! to ensure that their animals are protected against seasonal ailments, especially in the run-up to Christmas.
