Virtual pets 'no match for the real thing'

Children with cyber pets miss out on a range of activities that kids who have a real-life four-legged friend benefit from.
Such is the opinion of Neil McIntosh writing in the Daily Record, who states that while there are a number of advantages of having a virtual pet, such as not shedding hair everywhere, there are many aspects of pet care that can be beneficial to young people.
"Pets can be vital components in a child's life. They are the reliable, dependable friend who greets you enthusiastically when you come home, no matter how badly you did in your spelling test," he explains.
As well as being a companion, pets can teach children the value of responsibility and the importance of looking after things that they care about.
However, unlike cyber pets, real animals can become sick and as such it may be advisable for owners to invest in comprehensive pet insurance to ensure that any unexpected veterinary bills can be covered.
The benefits of adopting an older animal were noted in recent days by Pet First Healthcare as part of Adopt a Senior Pet Month, which is currently underway.
