Pet insurance "will depend on breed"

Certain breeds of dog are more prone to injury or ailments and this can affect the cost of an insurance policy, one expert has warned.
A spokeswoman for the RSPCA said today that the cost of insuring some dogs is likely to depend on their type and that owners need to specify what type they have when applying for pet insurance.
"You'll see if you actually apply for a pet insurance policy that you have to fill in information on what breed of dog you've got, and that will affect the cost of your cover," she said.
She added that dogs that are cross-bred are often cheaper to insure as they are seen to be more resilient and that some breeds have specific illnesses that they are more susceptible to.
"Labradors, for example, can get hip dysplacia and things like that. So it does depend on the breed of dog," she concluded.
The RSPCA estimates that around 17 per cent of dogs in the UK have valid pet insurance and that nearly 50 per cent of pets will incur medical bills averaging £220.
