Festive treats 'may cause allergy trouble for pets'

Animal lovers who plan on treating their furry friends to festive food this Christmas have been warned that such titbits could trigger an allergic reaction in their pets.
While many dog owners know not to give their pooch chocolate, they may be surprised to learn that allergies to food such as turkey, chicken, mince pies and rice are becoming increasingly common in canines, according to Yorktest Veterinary Services.
Paula Peacock, spokesperson for the firm, comments that signs of allergy include itching, hair loss, low stamina and skin problems.
"An allergy is a reaction caused by direct contact, eating or breathing in an allergen such as food or pollen. If a dog is regularly exposed to an allergen, such as eating the same food, the resistance of its immune system will weaken, often resulting in poor health," she explains.
Consumers may find that health problems that caused by allergic reactions can be costly to treat and as such it may be advisable to invest in comprehensive pet insurance.
The RSPCA recently stated that taking out pet insurance to protect an animal against unexpected veterinary fees is "extremely important".
