Look after pets this Christmas, says CVMA

Pet lovers have been urged to ensure that their animals are safe during the festive season.

The California Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) notes that elements of an owner's home can be dangerous to a pet's health.

"Cars, antifreeze, heaters and wood stoves can be death traps for animals if pet owners are not careful," warns Dr Jeff Smith, president of the association.

He adds that anything with an electrical cord or heat source, such as a heater that humans may use for extra warmth in the winter, could be dangerous to domestic animals.

The CVMA warns that pets may also be at more risk from conditions such as frostbite due to the drop in temperature and recommends that pets should be kept inside at night if at all possible.

With so many risks around, it may be advisable for consumers to ensure that they have comprehensive pet insurance in place to cover the cost of any potentially expensive veterinary bills.

In recent days, animal lovers who plan on treating their furry friends to festive food over the Christmas period were warned that such titbits could trigger an allergic reaction in their pets.
