Do not risk 'death by chocolate' this Christmas

A record number of dogs could become sick by eating chocolate this year, it has been reported.
The Daily Mail notes that many pet owners are unaware that the food is dangerous for canines to eat as it contains theobromine, a stimulant found in the cocoa bean, which can affect the animals' central nervous system and heart.
Katy Horton, a vet based in London, tells the publication: "Pet owners often forget the hazardous aspects of the festive season. Dangers include chocolate decorations and edible presents wrapped under the tree."
She notes that if owners become aware that their pooch has eaten chocolate, they should take them to the vet straight away.
In related news, Yorktest Veterinary Services warned owners to be careful of the food they give their pets over the yuletide period as titbits such as turkey, mince pies and chicken can cause an allergic reaction in animals, which could require a costly pet insurance claim.
