Some £2.2 billion is spent every year by owners intent on pampering their pets, according to new research.
Citing figures from esure, The Express and Star reports that the average dog owner spends £436.54 per year on their canine companion.
While £372.32 is spent on food, £31.65 goes on trips to the grooming parlour and £25.94 is invested in accessories such as collars and coats.
Finally, at least £6.63 is spent on a gift for the festive period.
Some 17 per cent of dog owners also admitted to carrying their animals to prevent them from growing tired.
Those eager to ensure that their pets enjoy as long and happy a life as possible may find that pet insurance is a wise choice to spend some cash on, as the product may help to deal with any unexpected veterinary costs.
In recent days, the RSPCA stated that pet insurance is "extremely important" in helping owners to deal with unanticipated vet bills.
