Christmas concern at pet overeating

Vets are growing increasingly concerned over the increasing number of portly pets overindulging on festive fayre during the Christmas period.
According to new research by Petplan, one in ten British owners admit to overfeeding their animals during the yuletide season.
In addition, it is not just humans handing their leftovers to pets that is an issue as nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of animals have helped themselves to Christmas food.
Simon Wheeler, head of marketing at the pet insurance provider, explains that many people may feel they are ignoring their animal as they do not get to take part in the festive family meal and as such give them scraps.
"Unfortunately, what they are doing by over-indulging the family pet is the exact opposite of kindness. Pets need a healthy balanced diet which is what properly formulated animal food gives them," he notes.
In related news Yorktest Veterinary Services recently advised owners to be particularly careful of what they feed pets during Christmas as treats such as mince pies can bring about an allergic reaction in some species.
