However, Reuters has identified ten of the more unusual gifts that some lucky canines could look forward to this yuletide season.

For as little as £36, the Pedigree Tree states that it can trace a dog's family tree, whether they are purebred or a mongrel - and with versions of the genealogical resource soon to be launched for cats and horses, it could prove the perfect gift this holiday season.

Those wishing to give their animal a festive treat that they can really get their teeth into may find that Crunchkins edible greeting cards, which are made of rawhide panels and non-toxic ink, are the perfect present for dogs over Christmas.

In recent days, pet insurance provider Petplan stated that one in ten British owners admit to overindulging their pets with food over the festive period.
