Pets 'not just for Christmas'

The majority of pets that are handed into refuges are received in the time just after Christmas, according to Petmeds.co.uk.
Ricky Thomas, managing director of the UK pet health store, stated today that while it is commonly believed that the festive period is the worst for pets being abandoned - and that many animals are discarded over the yuletide season - it is often more prevalent after Christmas.
He explains that this pattern shows that in many cases it is not just someone having been given an animal as a festive gift and then getting rid of it once Christmas is over.
"There seems to be a policy of 'out with the old and in with the new'", Mr Thomas notes.
Recent research by the firm suggests that a total of 1.3 million people planned to buy a dog for their friends or family over the Christmas period while 875,000 intended to purchase a cat.
