Half of dog owners and a third (34 per cent) of cat owners consider their animal's choices when buying home furnishings, according to new research by pet insurance firm Petplan.
The study suggests that pet owners base major decisions about their lives on what they believe will be most suitable for their domestic animals.
A total of nine per cent of cat owners said that their animal would have a say in their partner and six per cent of those who own dogs said they were taken into consideration with regard to their romantic choices.
Head of marketing at the pet insurance firm Simon Wheeler commented: "It's reassuring to know that owners are thinking so much about the wellbeing of their pets - even right down to choice of husband or wife."
In recent days, health store Petmeds.co.uk recommended that all owners should invest in pet insurance as soon as they get an animal.
