Pet insurance 'has never been more important'

The importance of adequate cover for domestic animals was outlined today by pet insurance provider LV=.

Andrew Beard, head of business development at the firm, commented that as a wider range of treatments becomes available due to advances in medical and veterinary technology, fees for the treatment of conditions also increase in price.

"Whereas five years ago many pet owners could have afforded the majority of treatments, now some claims run into thousands of pounds, meaning it is beyond many peoples' financial ability," he added.

Mr Beard stated that a total of one in three cats and dogs gets ill or is injured every year and that the average trip to the vet costs an owner some £300.

In related news, the importance of adequate domestic animal cover was recently highlighted by pet health store Petmeds.co.uk, which stated that all owners should get pet insurance from "day one" of owning an animal.
