Microchip service offered for dogs

A new microchip service offered by Microsoft will mean pets can be easily associated with their owners, it has emerged. In what could help animal lovers avoid a costly pet insurance claim, microchips are to be injected into dogs and will provide a unique reference number to the council's dog warden service that will inform them of the pet's owner, reports the Peterborough Evening News. The scheme is to be introduced for dogs at the Bridge House car park on East Station Road in Peterborough on February 23rd at a cost of £15 for the pet owner.
However, a meeting can be arranged by a member of the council's team to provide the service for other animals at any other time, the article noted. "Microchips are harmlessly implanted into an animal by using a sterile injection needle," council pest control and dog service manager Peter Harris told the newspaper. "Once in place, it will provide a unique number to a microchip scanner. This number can then be matched with a database to give details of the registered pet owner," he added. Advances in medical and veterinary technology mean healthcare costs for animals are rising and are beyond many people's financial ability, emphasising the need for owners to ensure that they have adequate pet insurance cover, Andrew Beard, head of business development at Liverpool Victoria recently commented.
