Almost a fifth (17.2 per cent) of pet owners plan to spend cash on their animals on Valentine's Day, according to a study carried out by BIGresearch for the American National Retail Federation.
Further findings from the survey suggest that this means over 23 million people will purchase a treat for their furry friend to celebrate the romantic day.
Women were found to be more generous to their animals, with 18.7 per cent planning to procure a present for their pet in comparison to 15.7 per cent of men, reports UKPets.co.uk.
The average amount spent on an animal is £7.73, meaning that a total of £184 million will be spent on lucky critters in February.
Owners wishing to ensure that their animal is happy and healthy for as long as possible may well find that they benefit from investing in comprehensive pet insurance, which can help with the cost of expensive vet fees.
In recent days, Sainsbury's Bank suggested that a high-quality pet insurance policy will cover a range of treatments and services.
