Animal owners are being encouraged to become more energetic with their furry friends by PetFirst Healthcare.

In an attempt to showcase how exercise can help to keep both animals and their owners active and healthy, PetFirst has launched a campaign to find the "ulti-mutt" sporty canine.

Chief executive officer of the firm Brent Hinton comments: "Sports are something all pet owners can engage their pets in regardless of pedigree."

The company is encouraging owners to send in home videos of their animals taking part in energetic activities as part of its "Mutt Madness" project.

Healthy and active animals may be less prone to becoming overweight and less likely to require a costly pet insurance claim.

In related news, the 21 best dog walk routes in the UK have been highlighted by Hill's Pet Nutrition and tourism bodies including VisitWales, EnjoyEngland and VisitScotland in an attempt to promote mobility in Britain's dogs.
