Obesity 'a large problem' in cats and dogs

Obesity is a big problem in dogs and cats, according to vet employer PDSA.
Jenny Davies from the firm explained in recent days that in a survey carried out by the company, one in three canines and one in four felines were classed as overweight.
She adds that obesity is also linked to a number of other conditions, such as heart disease, liver problems and diabetes.
Being overweight also means that animals can have issues with exercise due to potentially weak or arthritic joints having extra pressure placed on them by excess flab.
Ms Davies concludes: "Some pets are more susceptible to certain conditions, but this may not necessarily be linked to the costs of the pet's care. For example, some breeds of dogs may have an increased susceptibility to hip problems and some to heart problems."
PDSA states that it is the largest private employer of fully-qualified veterinary surgeons and nurses in Europe.
