Pet toys tested for lead

Concerns over the safety of children's toys have received much publicity in recent months, but now experts are calling for greater regulations concerning the import of pet toys. Cheryl Weston, with the US-based Lead-Safe Omaha Coalition, said that there have been a number of cases where pets have become very ill because of contact with unsafe toys.
Dogs using chew-toys that have a lead content are particularly at risk are particularly at risk, she states.
Pet-owners in the UK may find comfort in a recent report that found that Britain's vets are some of the most highly specialised in the world, with a range of pet insurance policies available to cover expensive medical procedures.
The DataMonitor report found that as well as having highly-trained vets, the UK also had access to a competitive pet insurance market.
A number of pet toys are now being examined for lead content with the same techniques used to test children's toys.
"We know that products especially from China contain lead. We're finding it in our own kids' toys, so I'm not so surprised to see it in pet toys too," says Molly Goedeker of ATC Associates, a specialist in environmental safety assessment.
