Owners opt for Prozac for depressed pets

Some British pet owners are looking to alleviate their animal's depression with prescription medication such as Prozac, it has been reported.
Those concerned with the mental health of their animal are increasingly looking to use the drugs to cheer up their pets when they become downbeat.
A veterinary expert has claimed that around two thirds of domestic animals will respond to treatment, with the medication proving particularly effective for tropical birds.
Romain Pizzi, who presents a popular animal show on the BBC, has said that parrots often become depressed because they are very intelligent animals with a complex range of emotions.
However, he added that a course of medication was only offered in extreme cases where environmental improvements had proved ineffective.
Dogs are also said to suffer from bouts of depression, with About.com stating that canines can become less playful and more lethargic in response to emotional traumas such as moving home or as a result of pre-existing chemical imbalance.
