McCain leads potential 'first pet' race

If being the biggest animal lover was the key to winning the US presidential election, senator John McCain would be a heavy favourite to win the race, according to reports. Mr McCain, who is now set to be the Republican party's nominee for president, has a total of four dogs, a parakeet and a shoal of fish, putting him way ahead of Democratic candidate Barak Obama, whose family have no pets at all. The 71-year-old republican senator must have dealt with plenty of pet insurance issues during his time as a politician, because the Times reports that he has previously been the proud owner of an iguana and a ferret. Mr McCain would not have been alone in needing presidential pet insurance, however, as dogs of all shapes and sizes have been part of the White House for decades, with everyone from Lyndon B Johnson to George W Bush keeping a pooch while occupying the Oval Office. Earlier this week, the Crufts Dog Show, which describes itself as the greatest dog show in the world, was officially launched in London.
