Microchipping service for dogs offered

Pet owners in the Lincolnshire town of Gainsborough have been encouraged to have their dogs microchipped.
The RSPCA offered the reduced-price service to local residents yesterday, the Gainsborough Standard reports.
The procedure - an established method or reuniting lost dogs with their owners - is available to most other animals, including cats, rabbits, horses and even ferrets.
"The purpose of the day is to help owners take advantage of the opportunity to get their pets chipped at a reduced price," RSPCA officer Sarah Tucker told the paper.
During the pain-free procedure, a tiny microchip is inserted under the animal's skin where it can be read by a scanner in the event that the it becomes lost.
Although the procedure is not compulsory, individuals wishing to take their animal abroad and back into the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme must ensure their pet is microchipped.
Some pet insurance policies will cover the cost of quarantine kennelling should a microchip fail at customs.
According to the RSPCA, almost 500,000 animals nationwide have been microchipped over the past five years.
