Price paid for uninsured dog

It makes financial sense to take out pet insurance as ensuring a good quality of life for a dog or any other animal could mean mounting costs for their owner.
This is according to Philip Suter of jml Insurance who personally experienced the high cost of dog ownership without pet insurance.
Mr Suter explained that when he adopted a healthy, 16-month-old rescue dog more than two years ago, he and his wife had the animal spayed and got a pet passport for her.
However, their seemingly healthy dog started displaying strange behaviour the following summer and failed to eat properly because her gums were bleeding.
The pet was diagnosed with a disease which means she needs to be on steroids constantly, have regular blood tests and is prone to illness.
So far, the Suters spent more than £2,500 on their pet's medical treatment. They took out pet insurance towards the end of 2006 and even though her ongoing condition would not have been covered by pet insurance providers, other medical issues or accidents are covered.
jml Insurance claims that taking out such cover "makes financial sense".
There is one pet option tested in nursing homes in the USA that requires no pet insurance. Saint Louis University researchers tested the merits of a robotic dog that can live with elderly dog-lovers and help counteract loneliness, without the strains of caring for a living creature.
