Pet owners are having to pay out more to keep their animals healthy due to an increase in veterinary costs.
Quoting figures from the Society of Practicing Veterinary Surgeons, financial services provider Tesco Pet Insurance states that the price of regular treatment has increased by more than 20 per cent since 2002.
Allan Burns, head of the organisation, comments: "Pet owners are responsible for ensuring their pets are kept healthy and happy and that includes picking up expensive vets fees if they've no insurance."
He adds that it is important to know that in the event of an unexpected illness or accident that an animal's medial treatment can be paid for.
In related news financial services provider Saga recently stated that clumsy cats and dogs are the source of 14 per cent of pet insurance claims it receives, with cats in the West Midlands being identified as the most careless felines in the country.
