Hamsters 'should be handled daily' - pet health insurance

Pet owners should play with their hamsters on a daily basis, an expert has explained.
Kenny Sharp, a specialist at the Lothian Animal Rescue and Re-housing Centre, tells the Edinburgh Evening News that they are often a child's first choice of pet, but that they can be aggressive during the day as they are nocturnal.
"Sometimes they can even bite their owners. But as long as they are handled on a daily basis and well looked after, this shouldn't be a problem," he adds.
The creatures are vulnerable to skin diseases and pneumonia - which could result in the need to pay a visit to a vet, the publication explains.
A comprehensive pet health insurance policy could help to cover the costs of treatment for such conditions.
Hamsters.co.uk explains that the creatures can live for two to three years, adding that there are likely to be times in their lives where prompt veterinary treatment is required.
