Vets 'note rise in food-related cases' - pet health insurance

Veterinary clinics have noted an increase in the number of pets they treat for food-related illnesses, it has been asserted.
Pet supply firm Petronic.com explains that this is due to the fact that many animals eat food intended for their owners during mealtimes.
The company explains that cuisine which is intended for humans can make pets very sick - and in some cases be fatal - if they eat it.
Especially harmful products include chocolate, milk, garlic and macadamia nuts.
The firm notes that garlic can cause anaemia in pets, while milk can result in vomiting and diarrhoea.
Macadamia nuts can cause tremors and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters.
In related news, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recently urged pet owners to not give any chocolate to animals over the Easter period as the chemical theobromine in the confection can be fatal to dogs.
