Canine cop gets protective vest - pet insurance for dogs

Pupils at the Mary Blount Elementary school have invested in their very own brand of pet insurance for dogs - by buying a protective vest for a local police dog.
First graders at the school donated birthday money, did chores and participated in many other fundraising events to raise the $515 (£259) needed to buy the vest for the K-9 Unit of the Blount County Sheriff's Office, the Daily Times reports.
Teacher Trisha Falcon told the paper the children were inspired after visiting the Sheriff's Office, commenting: "The students said they did this so the bad guys cannot hurt the dogs."
Prize force pooch Zeny was delighted with the children's hard work and promptly repaid the hard work by treating the class to a sniffer and pursuit display drill - proudly modelling his brand new vest, the newspaper reports.
The effectiveness of dogs - both real and imaginary - in police pursuits was demonstrated recently in New Zealand.
Police officers in Porirua told a fleeing drunk driver the neighbourhood dog barking next door was a police-trained canine - at which point he instantly gave himself up.
