A cat found in downtown Manhattan has been given a life-saving hip replacement. The tabby, named Winston, underwent the surgery yesterday after staff at the Humane Society of New York found him. Winston's new $1,000 (£500) hip was donated by Biomedtrix, a New Jersey-based veterinary orthopaedics manufacturer, and was implanted at Long Island veterinary specialists in Longview. He has been described as a "friendly cat who likes to be held", according to Dr Dominic Marino who performed the surgery. Spokeswoman for the veterinary hospital Pat Rosen said: "Everybody's falling in love with him and wants him, he's such a sweet, sweet cat." According to the website kittiharbor.com, Feline Hip Dysplasia (FHD) is a non-genital illness that is an inherited trait among most breeds of feline. FHD occurs when instability in the hip joint results in a disintegration of cartilage and increased wear in the joint leading to significant pain and possible osteoarthritis.
