Police dog recruits finish training - pet insurance for dogs

Four German shepherd dogs have completed their police training and will go on to fight crime, it has been reported.
The 14-month-old dogs, Koda, Murphy, Sharpe and Taz - all brothers - passed out of training with Devon and Cornwall Constabulary and will now serve with Exeter and Plymouth police dog sections, according to Exeter Express & Echo.
In their training, the recruits were taught tracking, search and obedience skills, as well as how to chase a suspect and the best place to bite someone running from the police.
Sgt Tony Jordan, manager of the dog unit, told the paper of the rigorous training regime: "It's 13 weeks of sheer hell for them. It's an awful lot of work for the dogs and the handlers to take on board, but worth it."
Throughout the course, the dogs have lived with their handlers and will now move in with their human co-workers on a permanent basis.
"They are not pet dogs, but they definitely do become part of the family," added Sgt Jordan.
Last month, it was reported by Sky News that a retired police drug sniffer dog was given a harness with two wheels to help support his unsteady hips.
