New research reveals that many UK residents believe that their cat or dog has been stolen, in news that may interest those considering pet insurance.
The study by Sainsburys shows that one million pet owners think an animal companion has been stolen in the past five years, while the findings also reveal that 61 per cent of owners never see their missing pets again.
Steve Johnson of Sainsbury's commented: Its difficult to know the full scale of dog and cat theft because it's impossible to know for sure if the cat or dog has been stolen, lost or suffered an accident."
In addition, the study, combined with figures from the Missing Pets Bureau which suggest that 38 per cent of pets reported lost are actually stolen, shows that pet theft is a real concern to dog and cat owners.
The Missing Pets Bureau claim that 5,700 dogs and cats are lost every week and maintains a register of the UK's missing animals to help reunite owners and pets.
