A dog who survived being impaled on a stick has been named the survivor of the year by a pet charity.
Six-year-old Border collie Fern received the PDSA's Pet Survivor of the Year after the charity heard her story of bravery.
The dog was injured after jumping in a river and landing on a ten-inch stick, receiving two broken ribs, a collapsed lung and ruptured intestines.
However, plucky Fern recovered after two operations and a blood transfusion and has since given birth to a litter of five pups.
Owners Barry Butcher and Clare Molyneux, who should have pet health insurance for their accident-prone animal, were "delighted" to receive the award.
Mr Butcher said: "This is a great way of celebrating her will and determination to survive."
"Fern's a member of the family and we couldn't bear the thought of losing her," added Ms Molyneux.
Other pets in the running for the award included a cat that was ill after eating rat poison.
