The Forestry Commission is holding the first ever Dog Cup Championship in the 5,000-acre Hamsterley Forest near Bishop Auckland to find the region's top dogs, reports the Northern Echo.
Families are welcome at the April 27th event at the Hamsterley Visitor Centre while further rounds will be held later in the year, with all money raised going to various canine charities.
Show classes for a variety of breeds and fun categories, such as waggiest tail, best trick and the dog most like its owner, will be included at the event, with the winners of the cup being announced at the end of the summer.
Laura Hull from the commission told the paper: "We are trying to make our forests as dog friendly as possibly, recognizing that walkies in the woods keeps both beast and owner in rude health."
The Forestry Commission works to keep the UK's woods and forests in good condition and run a variety of recreation, regeneration and educational schemes.
