Dog owners can work towards a greener future by making sure they choose environmentally-friendly products, it has been claimed.
The Dogs Trust Blog has made suggestions for ways to cut canines' carbon footprints and to help in the fight against climate change.
Attention is drawn to the range of eco-friendly dog toys that are available, such as hemp chew ropes and recycled dumbbells, while beds can be found that are made from green or recycled materials.
Biodegradable poop scoop bags are also noted as a way in which pet owners can reduce the amount of harmful plastic that they put into the environment and the blog also points out that bacterial toilet systems can also help deal with dog waste.
"Don't forget that the other end of the digestive system can also be more eco-friendly," reminds the website, before highlighting the benefits of organic pet food, which are developed without hormones and pesticides.
The UK pumped more that 156 million of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in 2006, according to Friends of the Earth, although there are no figures on how much of these can from dogs.
