The RSPCA has revealed that it rescued nearly 150,000 exotic, wild, farm and domestic animals during 2007.
According to figures released by the charity, there has been a 23 per cent increase in the number of animals which were abandoned by their owners, and most of them were cats.
Tim Wass, chief officer of the RSPCA inspectorate, said: "From birds injured by oil spills to stranded cattle, and cats in road traffic accidents to dogs simply abandoned by their owners, the RSPCA was on hand last year to help all types of animals whatever the emergency."
He added that last summer the RSPCA deployed the biggest number of staff in a generation to the rescue of horses, farm animals and other pets from the "severe floods that swept the country".
After just four months of 2008, the charity has already rescued 2,621 abandoned animals, according to the RSPCA figures.
The RSPCA is a registered charity and received no lottery or state funding.
