Vets fundraising for helper dogs - Online pet insurance quote

Warwickshire vets are aiming to buy and train a puppy which will help disabled people, it has emerged.

Staff with Avonvale Veterinary Centres have lined up a range of activities to raise £5,000 to put towards the project, reports the Coventry Telegraph.

An amateur dog show, pet pampering sessions and pet portrait sittings are among the events that have been arranged, while a charity raft race and a motorcycle ride from Land's End to John O'Groats are also being planned.

The money that is raised will be given to Dogs for the Disabled, a Kenilworth-based charity which trains assistant dogs to help disabled people with tasks such as picking up the post and emptying a washing machine.

Diane Goddard, practice manager at Avonvale Veterinary Centres, told the paper: "Some of our clients have assistant dogs and we can see how dramatically such partnerships can transform the life of a disabled person."

Since its foundation 20 years ago, Dogs for the Disabled has trained over 350 helpful hounds and claims that they allow disabled people to overcome some of the difficulties they experience.
