A service which allows people to text details of their missing pet has won an award in Wokingham, it has emerged.
Dog and Bone, invented in January by Mandy Dorman, sends information about a missing cat or dog to a team of volunteers who then search for the animal, reports getwokingham.
The scheme has received the mayor's award, which is handed out every month to an individual or organisation that helps the community.
Mrs Dorman told the newspaper: "It's nice to be recognised for doing something new and different by the mayor, and of course receiving the award is a great honour."
Also included in the scheme is a council website that lets people post pictures of found dogs, in the hopes that their owner recognises them.
Dog and Bone has been so successful in reuniting owners with missing pets that other councils are interested in adopting the approach, to reduce the number of stray dogs on the streets.
Last month, research from Sainsbury's suggested that one million pet owners believe their missing animals have been stolen in the past five years.
