New research has shown that dogs and cats remain the UK's most popular pets.
The study, carried out by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) on behalf of National Pet Month, reveals that dogs account for 7.3 million and cats 7.2 million of the UK's 27 million pets.
When questioned why they have bought an animal, large numbers answers that it was for companionship, with 39 per cent of London pet owners and 60 per cent of single people giving this reason.
Phil Sketchley, chairman of National Pet Month, commented: "Pet ownership has grown over the years to this national high and its no surprise that so many pet lovers see their pet as a companion."
The findings also discovered that 21 per cent of people have wanted a pet since they were children, while 27 per cent bought their companion from a animal shelter or rescue centre compare to the 20 per cent who used a pet shop.
National Pet Month, which ran from April 5th to May 5th, celebrated the UK's fondness for pets and promoted responsible ownership.
It also used events across the country to raise money for the nation's pet and animal charities.
