A smart dog has saved a woman from a Welsh river after being commanded by her owner, it has emerged.
Brenda Howatson and her labrador Penny were taking a stroll along the River Elwy in Denbighshire when she spotted a woman struggling in the water, reports the BBC.
When Mrs Howatson commanded the plucky hound to "fetch", Penny jumped into the river and dragged the victim to safety.
By pulling her close to the bank, Penny enabled her human companion to pull the unconscious woman from the water.
The site of the incident was near a whirlpool in the river, which the dog normally avoids, reveals the proud owner.
"I'm very proud of Penny, she did a great job. I'm not a strong swimmer but if Penny hadn't have been there I'd have had to try and swim into the whirlpool," Mrs Howatson told the news provider.
A spokeswoman for North Wales Police said that the two's actions had saved the woman's life.
In related news, a Yorkshire Terrier had to rely on humans to rescue it, according to the Shields Gazette.
The hapless dog, which should be considered for pet health insurance, had to be winched out a 15-metre hole in Whitburn, Tyneside.
