The shortlist for the Greater Manchester Pet Idol 2008 competition has been announced by the Manchester Evening News.
Eight animals, out of the thousands of entries submitted to the paper, are in the running for the title of the best pet in the area.
Dogs are well represented in the finalists, with King Charles Spaniel Holly, St Bernard Troy, westie Frank, rescue hound Riley, who works with special needs children, and dog Gwen all hoping to gain first place.
However, they are face non-canine competitors in the form of kitten Phoenix, a three-month-old British shorthair, Jack the cat and Holly the African pygmy hedgehog.
Graham Bedworth, assistant manager at Pets At Home in Stockport, which is supporting the contest, told the paper: "There's been a great response to the contest across Greater Manchester.
"People love their pets, so it was always going to be a hit and thousands of photos have been sent in."
He also said that usual pets, such as marmosets, ferrets and hedgehogs, are popular in the area.
Last month, it was reported by the Metro that the craze for African pygmy hedgehogs has arrived in the UK, with enthusiasts describing the animal as "incredibly cute".
