Up to 11 million UK pet owners are not covered by some form of pet insurance, new research has suggested.
Findings by Sainsbury's showed that of those with pet insurance, 4.61 million owners, or 42 per cent, believed that it was not necessary, while 1.13 million, or 10 per cent, considered it to be too expensive.
Some 897,000 (eight per cent) of respondents said that their cat or dog is healthy and therefore would not need pet health insurance and 709,452 (six per cent) reported that they could not afford the cover.
Steve Johnson, from Sainsbury's Finance, commented: "Dogs and cats are just as likely to get ill and require treatment as we are but there's no NHS for them.
"Pet insurance really is essential if you don't want to get caught out by costly vet bills."
He also revealed that the average vet's bill is around £300 and one in 26 visits results in a pet insurance claim of more than £1,000.
Research last week from the the Pet Food Manufacturers Association revealed that cats and dogs remain the UK's most popular pets, with 7.3 million canines and 7.2 million felines topping the list of animal companions.
