Poppy, the pet Shih-Tzu of Anna Gardener and her severely disabled daughter Angela, went missing from their garden in Thornwood, Epping, according to the Epping Forest Guardian.
The two searched for the missing dog for hours before putting up posters in the area appealing for help.
Luckily, Poppy was found by a local man, who went on to the return the dog after spotted the posters.
Describing the man as "a hero", Mrs Gardener told the newspaper: "He was a real gentleman, he took Poppy home and then dropped her off at the Mutts in Distress Centre in Harlow.
"He contacted us after seeing one of our posters."
She added that the rescuer was not motivated by the thought of a reward, as he did not realise there was one when he saved the dog.
With a history going back 1,000 years, the Shih-Tzu was domesticated in Tibet where they were used as companions and watchdogs, according to the Shih-Tzu Club.
