A Hampshire woman has launched a battle to save a breed of dog which is frequently left homeless, it has emerged.
Nikki Barrett, a Romsey resident, is trying to save Akitas - which are often abandoned after they reach adulthood - reports the Southern Daily Echo.
The dogs, although popular when puppies, can grow to weigh as much as 50 kilogrammes as adults, placing a strain on many owners.
As a member of the Friends of Akitas Trust, Ms Barrett works to rescue dogs that are at the risk of being destroyed by the local council and pays for them to be housed in kennels until a permanent place can be found for them.
She told the newspaper: "This is a gorgeous breed, affectionate and intelligent. They are just misunderstood because they are so big."
According to the Friends of Akitas Trust, the dog is a Japanese breed, which represents good health, good fortune and prosperity in their native country.
