The big speculation among dog lovers at the Cannes Film Festival is not who will take the Palme d'Or, but the hound in the running for the Palm Dog.
Recognising the hard work that cinematic canines put into their acting work, the award rewards the winning hound with a brass-studded black leather collar.
Toby Rose, founder of the Palm Dog, said: "Dogs are crucial to films and yet they are totally overlooked."
On the panel to judge the best acting performance by a dog are notable film critics such as Charles Gant, James Christopher and Derek Malcolm.
In 2007, Mid Road Gang and Persepolis jointly won the title, while films in the running for this year's award include Blindness, Lake Tahoe and Wendy and Lucy. When asked for tips on the best dog to back, Mr Rose commented: "This year I'm very excited about the dog that kisses Julianne Moore."
The Palm Dog is twinned with the Fidos, another award for canine actors, which last year recognised Dame Helen Mirren's corgi co-stars in the The Queen in the Best in World category. Please click here for more information on pet insurance for dogs and a pet insurance online quote.
