The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) has unveiled a search to find the UK's top rescue dog.
As the largest competition of its kind, the RSPCA Dog of the Year 2008 award is open to hounds of all pedigrees and cross-breeds that have been rescued from unfortunate conditions.
In the first stage of the competition, over 60 local heats will be held to award canines on their condition, overall appearance and character, with the winners moving onto regional finals before the UK's top dog is revealed at the grand final in October.
The title is currently held by a blind bullmastiff called Oliver, who was abandoned by a dog breeder after developing an eye infection.
Owner Julie Harkess said: "I was so proud when Oliver was crowned RSPCA Dog of the Year. He really did capture the heart of the nation."
The winner of the competition will receive a cut-glass engraved trophy and a portrait by animal artist Michelle Murray.
In related news, the RSPCA has also launched a campaign to curb Britain's pet obesity problem.
Claiming that half the nation's cats and dogs are overweight, the charity has set up the petsgetslim.co.uk website to provide dieting tips and support.
