Pet owners in America are treating their deceased animal companions to increasingly elaborate funerals, it has emerged.
The Daily Telegraph has reported that spending on pet funerals in the US is expected to hit $43.3 billion (£21.6 billion) this year, with conventional undertakers moving into the sector.
Coleen Ellis, founder of animal funeral home Pet Angel Memorial Centre, told the newspaper that at owners pay between $185 and $5,000 to use its 24-hour service.
"They might walk on four legs and wear a little fur coat but they're still a member of the family. They spoil them in life so they want to do that in death too," Ms Ellis added.
She also revealed that the majority of the firm's business is from cats and dogs, although it has arranged funerals for chinchillas, iguanas and goldfish.
In the UK, animal lovers can find suppliers such as petfuneralservices.co.uk and petsinparadise.co.uk, which offer a range of coffins and headstones for their absent friends.
