A series of tips to make dog-friendly gardens have been revealed in the Carlisle Times & Star.
The article notes the first concern of a green-fingered dog owner should be make the garden secure and advises that strong boundary fences and gates can contain the pet.
Spots where children play can be separated from the dog's part of the garden with trellis or decorative fencing, while training the animal to use an easily-cleaned part of the area as a toilet can be beneficial.
"Many dogs like a sunny spot on warm paving on which to sunbathe; they should also have a patch of shade to retreat to when they get too hot," the article recommends.
As for greenery, it is best to use dense plantings of prickly shrubs such as berberis or holly to prevent the dog from breaking through hedges.
The publication also reminds owners to plant varieties which are safe for dogs to reduce the need for pet insurance claims, avoiding poisonous species such as monkshood, laburnum and foxgloves.
Dog charity the Partnership for Animal Welfare also recommends placing a sandbox in the garden, so the pet can indulge in its natural instinct to dig without causing damage.
