Animal lovers have tended to a cemetery that contains the graves of heroic pets, it has been reported.
Volunteers Lorna Tritton, Keith Burrows and Sylvia Yarlett helped with gardening at the PDSA animal cemetery in Redbridge, according to the Ilford Recorder.
The cemetery houses the graves of more than 3,000 animals, 12 of which received the PDSA Dickin medal.
Awarded during World War Two, the medal is the equivalent of the Victoria Cross in the animal kingdom and is handed out for bravery.
The cemetery was tidied up ahead of the opening of a new remembrance garden on June 25th.
Isabelle George, PDSA spokesperson, told the newspaper: "It's a lovely peaceful place which relies entirely on volunteers for maintenance."
Throughout World War Two, the PDSA Dickin medal was handed out 54 times, to 32 pigeons, 18 dogs, three horses and one cat, according to the PDSA, with a further eight medals being awarded after the conflict ended.
Recipients include Jet, an Alsatian who rescued people trapped up blitzed buildings, and Simon the cat, who continued to catch rats on HMS Amethyst after being injured by a shell blast.
