A four-year-old labrador has been named Heroic Hearing Dog of the Year after saving her owner from an intruder.
Nellie was recognised by Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, the charity that trained her, when she alerted Gill Houghton of Brighton about a stranger in her hotel room.
Ms Houghton said her family was on holiday in a bed and breakfast when Nellie woke her in the middle of the night.
"I thought she had made a mistake so I told her to get off the bed," she continued.
"But she jumped up again, alerted me and dropped to the floor in the emergency position," Ms Houghton revealed.
When she got out of bed, she noticed a man stood in the doorway of the room, at which the dog bravely put herself between the family and the intruder.
"Nellie did not flinch but sat and protected the children with her body," Ms Houghton told.
After being told to leave, the stranger eventually vacated the room, leaving the family shaken but safe.
The charity also named Figaro, a papillon and King Charles spaniel crossbreed, as Hearing Dog of the Month for helping his owner, Nancy Noble.
