A Cannington canine has formed an unlikely friendship with a chick, it has emerged.
Dog Nell, a four-year-old collie cross, has started to care for a chick which was abandoned by its mother after being born last week, according to the Bridgwater Mercury.
Judy Fursland and her granddaughter Beth Gardner began nursing the baby bird when it was hatched after its brothers and sisters and was rejected by the hen.
They kept the chick - which is nicknamed Rover - in a box with a lamp and later discovered it had gone missing, only to find it huddled with the family dog.
Beth, 14, told the newspaper: "The chick now thinks Nell is its mother and follows her everywhere.
"Nell keeps licking it which it doesn't like because chicks don't have baths, and Nell also tries to feed it."
According to the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, border collies often friendly and make good companion dogs - although chicken is usually on the menu, not a playmate.
