The RSPCA is looking for a new home for a family of albino rats which were abandoned in Peterborough, it has emerged.
A pet rat and her three babies were discovered by a dog walker near the Whittlesey Recycling Centre, before they were taken to the animal charity for care, reports the Peterborough Telegraph.
Sophie Wilkinson, a spokeswoman for the RSPCA, told the newspaper: "People are under the misconception that small domestic pets can look after themselves but they can't.
"They have got used to being fed and watered and most don't survive in the wild on their own."
She revealed the pets will be kept at a kennel in the city to allow the owner to collect them in the next week - after which they will be re-homed.
Ms Wilkinson also said one of the baby rats will be taken for treatment to its injured tail.
In April, the newspaper reported a craze of keeping rats had spread across the city following the Disney film Ratatouille, which then resulted in the animals being dumped.
Last year, the Daily Telegraph reported that Heather Mills suggested drinking rat milk as an alternative to farming dairy cows.
