Don't kiss animals, owners told

An animal charity has asked people to keep their animals in the dark about National Kissing Day next week. PDSA has warned that there is a risk of passing diseases from pet to person, even if they shared a quick peck - although it is not known if animals catching anything off humans in this way is covered by pet insurance. Sean Wensley, PDSA senior veterinary surgeon, reminded owners that dogs and cats groom themselves with their tongues and also revealed putting a face close to an animal's can make them aggressive. "While kissing a pet or being licked on the face might seem like harmless fun, there are in fact lots of bugs and germs that we can catch from getting too close to our pets," he added. National Kissing Day is held next week and aims to provide an opportunity for people to show the ones they love how much they care about them although Mr Wensley suggests a walk or a new toy as the best approach for an animal. PDSA has also launched a campaign to find the UK's most photogenic pet, with the champion winning their owner a brand new camera phone.
