A Bedlington animal lover has left a windfall donation to a pet shelter in her will, it has been reported.
Syliva Garrod, who died aged 79 last year, left more than £200,000 to the Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter, according to the News Post Leader.
Her friends, Tony and Anna Pike, gave the first of two £100,000 instalments to the charity this week and told the newspaper of her love of pets.
Mr Pike commented: "Her interest in animals was very intense, and the horses out the back of her house were a great source of inspiration for her to get up every morning."
The donation will be put towards building work at the shelter's Claremont Road premises.
A spokeswoman from the Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter said the charity is "extremely grateful" for the donation and revealed legacies such as Mrs Garrod's allow it to carry out improvements.
Earlier this month, the New York Times reported billionaire Leona Helmsley wrote a 'mission statement' which said her £8-billion fortune was to be donated to animal charities.
